A little problem: For a few years now we try to acquire seeds of the Boojum Tree and without any succes. We wrote (e-mail) to virtually any succulent nursery in the USA and Mexico including the ones which advertise the seeds of this Fouquieria columnaris but not a single reply. The Boojum Tree, we’ve figured that out already, is one of the (growing) monumental plants we miss amongst the other species of the Fouquieria genus which are growing very well in our environment.
So; here is our enquiry: who can supply us with viable seeds of the Boojum Tree?
Send your comment of e-mail us: soekershof -at- lando.co.za
Thanks.

Not sure if you’ve found what you needed but if I were looking for Boojum seeds I would start my search with the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona. I know that they have a few specimen growing in the garden and they have an incredibly extensive inventory of seeds of many desert adapted plants.
Their website address is http://www.dbg.org
I hope that helps.

Thanks Dan,
Unfortunately DBG in Phoenix was one of the BG’s at which we personally enquired …….
We think that only a private collector can provide us with seed.

It is illegal to collect the seeds. This is the only person I know of that sells large specimens. If anyone has seeds he would or you could go to the Baja and accidentally drop seeds in your pocket.

I live in the Mojave Desert, near Joshua Tree, and Ocotillo thrive on my property … I want to add a Boojum or two of moderate height (4-6 ft), but don’t know where to purchase them … any ideas? They seem to be more common in AZ and I would drive there to pick them up …

Dear James,
The Idria collumnaris (Boojum) originates from the North East of Baja Californa which is a winter rainfall area.
Transplanting a large boojum is seldom succesfull. Best is to grow them from seed (see one of comments above) or buy small plants. When you transplant these they will have a serious draw bak during the first week. Keep the soil wet (but not soaked) and stop watering as soon as you notice recovering (growth) again.
Hope you succeed in acuiring plants and seeds. Unfortunately it is difficult (custom regulations) to export young plants from South Africa to the Americas.
